African side-neck turtles have scales on the underside of their shells. Later, the scales fall off and are replaced with new ones. Unlike other turtles, this turtle does not hibernate seasonally.

The African Sideneck Turtle is a freshwater turtle that spends most of its time in mud, riverbeds, and shallow lakes. This dark-shelled animal feeds on invertebrates, such as insects and worms. The male African Sideneck Turtle stores its sperm from May to September. After that, it is released into the epidermis three times longer than the testes. Then, the female can lay as many as 6 to 40 eggs at a time.
